Date night, that magical time between careful child care arrangements and returning home to everyday chaos. My husband and I don’t get nearly enough date nights, so when we do get the chance to go out, we certainly make the most of it. Last weekend we had the pleasure of attending the Pittsburgh Opera to see Mozart’s, The Marriage of Figaro along with a backstage tour of all that goes into creating a show like this. As this was my first opera, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. My biggest concern was how I would know what they are singing about? Luckily I had nothing to worry about. Supertitles are provided above the stage arch translating the lyrics and there’s a handy synopsis within the program, so you’re covered even when the opera is in a different language. Everyone said this would be a great experience as a first opera, and they were right. We found ourselves laughing on more than one occasion and there were certainly twists I did not see coming. There are several modern operas scheduled for the 2017-2018 season as well, including The Long Walk and Moby Dick.
That evening I realized and remembered that no matter how much I may love watching and going to the movies, there is something very special and needed about attending live shows to experience the performance in person. And with so many options in our city, why not experience something a little out of your comfort zone? Another realization I had that evening; where there’s an ivy covered wall, there’s a photo opportunity not to pass up.
