A Striped Neutral Colored Nursery with a Touch of Green

A Striped Neutral Colored Nursery with a Touch of Green

When I was first pregnant with my second baby, I wasn’t sure if I’d make a nursery. We hardly used the one I painstakingly chose items for with our first son during his first year, and I didn’t know if it would be worth it since we aren’t planning to stay in our house long term. Since our guest room/office was already painted with neutral colored stripes and had the wall fabric and light fixture, I decided to change it to the nursery (we hardly used it as an office) while keeping the existing elements to make it easier. Speaking of the neutral painted stripes, that is a project my husband and I took on back when we first got our house. We probably wanted to kill each other 15 times that weekend, but I LOVE the paint in this room… So just an fyi, painting an entire room (vs. 1 statement wall, BIG difference) with perfectly lined up stripes is no small task. I want to say *never again* BUT, never say never! Not only did this end up being easy to decorate, I didn’t have to spend a lot. Granted, we already had a crib and rocking chair we could use, but being ok with working with other existing items made it a lot easier to pull together and I love how it turned out!

This biggest project we undertook for this room was the dresser. Originally I was looking at wood dressers, but then came across this green colored one that I absolutely loved. The problem was, it wasn’t available in the smaller size we needed, so I purchased this dresser from Ikea then found a green paint color I liked and my husband painted it. Once it was assembled in the room we added these handmade brass cabinet pulls. I definitely took longer than usual to make a decision on this dresser, and it’s funny because this is the actually the exact dresser I used in Doni’s room, too. Since I took so long to decide, there was a little bit of a rush to paint and get the dresser assembled in the room so I could organize the babies clothes before my C-Section. That meant we didn’t give it enough time to cure which resulted in some chips that needed touched up. So if you paint your dresser, give it at least a week to set rather than 1-2 days!

The one project I had been putting off (dreading, really) was cleaning out the closet. Since around the the fall I’ve been slowly trying to declutter, purge unused items, and clean out our house (especially closets). It’s amazing how much stuff you can accumulate in six years. Once that what finally done, the only other larger item I purchased was the round map rug. The rest of the items were things we already had! The framed black and white prints were sitting in my closet, I had this diy-ed tassel wall hanging being used in the basement that is much better suited in this space and happened to have some dried eucalyptus to fill up the wall vases. I draped some extra pieces of faux eucalyptus branches that I had used to decorate our Christmas tree onto the light fixture to soften it up a bit. I love how that changed the whole vibe of the room and played off the green from the dresser.

All in all I feel very good about this nursery and am so glad decided to complete this project. This room has such a calm and serene feeling and we actually use it a ton! Having a designated safe and quiet place to put the baby is a relief. We use it a lot for tummy time and quiet afternoon naps, not to mention I am able to keep all the baby toys in here separate from the bigger kid toys!
