Is anyone else loving the pom-pom trend as much as I am right now? I’ve crafted my fair share of pom-poms, and am so excited to put this little bit of know-how to use with a DIY style project that anyone can do. Full directions for how to create a diy pom-pom beach bag are below.
I used an old beach bag that I had on hand (it had seen better days) and a skein of yarn that I had leftover from another project. Making your pom-poms is probably the longest step, but so worth it for this cute summer trend!
What you’ll need to make your own pom-pom beach bag:
Beach Bag
Yarn
Scissors
Needle & Thread (don’t use hot glue, the pom-poms will fall off in the heat!)
Pom-Pom Maker (optional, instructions how to make poms without one are below)
The beauty of this DIY is that all you really need is a bag, yarn, scissors and your hands (and then needle and thread to sew the pom-poms onto your beach bag). I’ve seen people use very convenient pom-pom makers which are great, but if you don’t want to buy one I’ll walk you through how to easily make pom-poms without that tool.
To get this look, you’ll need to make 5 pom-poms. What you’ll need to do to make them is wrap the yarn around your hands, specifically your 4 fingers. Before wrapping, start by leaving the beginning strand of yarn out, then wrap around your hand. I counted 100 wraps each pom-pom to create a uniform size. You could do less for smaller pom-poms. I also wrap pretty quickly so even though it seems like a-lot, it doesn’t take long.
When you are finished wrapping, leave the last piece of yarn hanging a bit longer like the 1 piece you left out. Cut it and then carefully remove the yarn from your hand. Wrap and tightly tie the end pieces together. After tieing, cut all of the loops around the entire pom-pom. Once done cutting the loops, trim off excess yarn to create a uniform and even appearance.
The last step is to sew the pom-poms onto the beach bag. I used a basic needle and thread and no fancy stitching method, so even if you’ve never sewn before this is very doable and recommended. You could forgo this and hot glue the pom-poms on, but consider the conditions you’ll be using your bag under (high heat, humidity, etc.) and remember that the hot glue wouldn’t be guaranteed to hold the pom-poms onto your bag.
And that’s it! Now you have one of the cutest beach bags of the summer for a fraction of the cost! I love mine and have been carrying it around around sooo much. I love how it gave an old beach bag new life!
