A vignette in terms of decorating is a small area that’s been arranged with a grouping of objects to create a pleasing visual. Typically you will see this on a bedside table, dresser, shelf, kitchen counter or console table. Sometimes it can seem complicated how to style an area like this, but once you break down the elements to get there creating something like a bedroom vignette can be done with items you already have on hand!
While I love creating these little vignettes, it actually took me a while to style my own bedroom vignette to the point I wanted to share it, simply because I didn’t seek out items to intentionally build it. I ended up using items that had been collected over time to finally finish the area to this point where it really felt complete.

A large piece to define the background of the area. Here I used a set of framed botanical prints (similar here) that I found at HomeGoods, but it could also be a mirror or one larger piece of art that you may have.
An anchor piece, like the brass tray used here. Not only does it anchor the area, but it a great piece to have where small things can collect and still keep the spay looking tidy. I keep all my favorite earrings and necklaces here along with my favorite bottle of perfume. I just purchased some glass boxes at a really good price to add to the tray, one to keep statement earrings in, and the other to hold sunglasses.
A layering piece, this can be a frame that sits in front of the piece used to define the background, or in this case it’s a vintage picnic basket that does double duty as decor and storage (this one is almost identical to the one I have). I keep small scarves, a sewing kit and other little miscellaneous items in here. If I don’t have the large vase out, there is a family photo that I keep on the tray for another layering element.
Something organic – Here it’s the hydrangeas in a vase, but you could also use another natural elements like a small faux boxwood or a little house plant. I ended up drying some of the hydrangeas to keep here in a vase but tend to switch up the look and like having different options to play with.
Something Tall – In this case it’s the vase of flowers, but even when I don’t have the large vase with flowers out, the antique looking phone offers some height to balance the area. If you are doing this on your nightstand, use a lamp as your something tall.
More Decorating Tips:
- Decorate with an odd number, using the rule of threes is an easy way to create balance when decorating.
- Vary the height of the objects and group smaller pieces (like those on a tray) together.
- Mix materials and add texture. I used wicker, brass and glass here to have a mix or finishes.
- Use a “vintage” piece like a basket, books or vase. This can not only save money but adds some originality and interest to the area.
- Shop your house, you might be surprised what you can find on hand that will work great in an area like this!
If you’re creating a bedroom vignette, gather your objects and play with the groupings until you are happy with it. I typically will set things up, take a step back, then make changes as necessary. The great part is there is no one correct way to create a vignette, but using these tips will help making your own a breeze to fit your style!
